Shanghai Medical University founded in 1927.The university was originally called ¡°The Fourth Zhongshan University Medical School¡±and renamed in 1932 ¡°The National Shanghai Medical College¡±.After the founding of the People¡¯s Republic of China,it was renamed in 1952 ¡°Shanghai First Medical College¡±.In 1959,it was designated by the central government as one of the sixteen national key instutions of higher learning.Shanghai Medical University was given the present name in 1985.
Since its establishment the university has turned out nearly 30,000 grduates and some 20,000 trainees in advanced studies,who can be found all over the country and in many foreign countries as well.
The university comprises now nine schools £¨faculties£©with one hundred departments,twenty-two research institutes,fifteen research centers,four WHO collaborating centers,two teaching and training centers and one affiliated nursing school.The university offers twelve specialties for undergraduate studies,fifty-three Master¡¯s programs,thirty-seven doctoral programs and 4 postdoctoral research programs.In addition,the university is also a national base for training basic scientific research and teaching personnel,having thirteen key subjects accredited by the State Education Commission,four key subjects accredited by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and eight leading medical specialties with nearly 4,000 beds.Besides ,there are five teaching hospitals.
The university has a staff of 8,700 personnel,among whom are 1,500 professors and cssociate professors, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering,221 supervisors of doctorate candidates and 676 tutors of Master¡¯s program students.Some 4,000 fulltime students study in the university ,including 1,000 postgraduates and 100 foreign students.
The university possesses complete teaching facilities.The library has a collection of 490,000 books,the computer network on the campus has taken shape and connected to the INTERNET,CERNET AND SHERNET.The university has taken the lead in carrying out the telemedicine project in the country.Various laboratories and central laboratories are eqquipped with advanced instruments and equipment.The sports facilities such as swimming pool and gymnasium give the students the convenience of living on campus.
The university is actively invoved in academic exchanges both at home and abroad.Inter-university cooperative relationship has been set up with over 20 colleges and universities in the United States,Japan,France,Australia and Singapore,etc.

and administration of foreign students.The FSO administers Foreign Students
Building,Foreign Students Restaurant,Foreign Students Servicing Center,Foreign
Students Gymnasium, Auto-visual Room and ATM drawing money equipment.

4.PROCEDURES
A.Application materials
1) Fill in Application For Foreigners Wishing to Study in China £¨in Chinese or English£©.Who want to study Chinese language in our university must fill in Chinese Language Center,Shanghai Medical University Application Form £¨in Chinese or English£©.
2) Replica of the last formal schooling record and of the school report £¨translated into Chinese or English£©.
3) Undergraduates must have a recommendation letter from their sponsoring organization or famous people.Postgraduates must have two recommendation letters from their professors or associate professors.
4) Replica of notarized health checkup record £¨should be valid for 6 months£©, the oringinal manuscript will be taken by the students.
5) Self-paying applicants must have a guarantor who signs the Guarantor Form.
B. Application schedule
The academic year begins in the autumn.Application processing for autumn enrollment begins in February and ends in June.Spring enrollment is only for Chinese language students.Application processing for spring enrollment begins in November and ends in Bebruary of the next year.
C.Admission examination
1) Undergraduate applicants must be excellent in their senior middle school.
2) All the applicants must take part in the Chinese language test.To be an undergraduate or a postgraduate, the applicant¡¯s Chinese language level should reach the 4th grade £¨HSK£©.Otherwise he or she need another one or two years to study Chinese at first.
3) To be a medical undergraduate, the applicant must take part in the examination of mathematics,physics and chemistry,The qualified will be admited.Postgraduate applicants should attend the entrance examination.Applicants who have two years of working experience in the related specialty after graduation are exempt from the entrance ecamination.Our university just select the superior ones.
D. Admission
Students who have received the acceptance letter and Form JW202 or JW201 should show the two documents to the Chinese embassy in their countries in order to get a X-status visa.
E.Registration
New students should bring ten passport sized photos,the complete ¡°Health Certificate¡±,Form JW202 and the acceptance letter of Shanghai Medical University for registration on the registration date shown in the acceptance letter.
Self-paying students pay tuition,roomrent and other items.
5.SHORT-TERM CLASSES FOR FOREIGN LEARNERS
To meet the needs of those foreigners who intend to learn Chinese and to know about Traditional Chinese Medicine and culture.SMU offers them short-term classes such as of Chinese, acupuncture,etc.University students or personnel in institutions and organizations are all welcome.The training specialty,time and duration can be discussed through contacting directly with the Foreign Students Office of SMU.
1) Application procedures
Contact the Foreign Students Office of SMU for Application Form.Applicants are to fill in a form of Application for Short-term Training in SMU and send it to the FSO one and a half months in advance.After an examing and approving process,the FSO will send a JW202 to the applicant,who may take it to the Chinese Embassy and apply for a China visa.
2) Types of Short-term Class
Chinese Language Learning£ºAccording to the different levels of the applicants,different classes are set up with suitable teaching materials and various teaching methods.Twenty periods of class are taught in the morning through Monday to Friday in a week. The students may utilize the afternoons and weekends to see about Shanghai or have a sightseeing in the cities near Shanghai,such as Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Nanjing, Yangzhou and Zhenjiang.
Acupuncture Class£ºThe class aims to introduce Chinese acupuncture therapy,which is lectured in Chinese or English, translators are provided if needed.Practical training is included.Students also can learn Chinese in the morning and learn acupuncture in the afternoon.
6. MAIN FACILITIES IN FOREIGN STUDENTS LIVING AREA
Foreign Students Living Area is an independent one away from that of the Chinese Students.
1) FSO in the south building is charge of housing,visa,fax,letter and newspaper & magazine.
2) There is a grocery specially for foreign students, where daily merchandise are served.
3) There are two dining canteens in foreign students living area,where various foods are served to meet the needs of the foreign students.
4) There is a gymnasium in the foreign students building, where students can do physical exercise and indoor activities like table tennis.
5) Every dorm is furnished with a telephone and IDD & DDD are available.
6) The public facilities in foreign students dormitory are quite complete, including boiled water supply, kitchen rooms and washrooms.
7. THE LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS OF THE FOREIGN STUDENTS OFFICE
1) The FSO of Shanghai Medical University is located at the right side of SMU gate £¨138,Yi XueYuan Road£©,adjacent to Zhong Shan Hospital,in Xu Hui District, an cultural area in Shanghai.It is not far from the center of Shanghai.
2) From the train station to SMU,it takes 20 minutes by subway to Xujiahui.
3) From Hongqiao Airport to SMU, it takes about 30 minutes by car.
