| Department of Laboratory Animal Science was established in 1982, which
was the first one equal to the faculty in the medical university in our
country at that time. After that, it transformed its mere animal production
and supply task into comprehensive ones, which include animal production
and supply, medical laboratory animal science teaching course, scientific
research, development and animal experiment management. In 1982, we first
introduced international standard Beagle dog into our country, and began
to study the raise and reproduction of Beagle dog. Later the department
was nominated by Ministry of Health as center for experimental dog, one
of the six centers of laboratory animals in our country. In 1986 it was
qualified by the State Education Commission to have authority for offering
Master Degree of Medical Laboratory Animal Science, which was the only
one at that time in this field in our country.
Department of Laboratory Animal Science can be divided into 3 parts:the Laboratory Animal Production and Supply Section, the Medical Laboratory Animal Science Teaching and Research Section, and the Administrative Office, with total about 50 staff members. The Laboratory Animal Production and Supply Section produces about 90 thousand mice and rats and 300 Beagle dogs annually. Apart from meeting the need of research and teaching for our university, we also supply for other universities and institutions. The Medical Laboratory Science Teaching and Research Section was established in 1985. The teaching course is mainly towards the university students from School of Basic Medical and school of Pharmacy, whose specialty is pharmacology, and the postgraduate students for Master and Doctor degree. Since then 10 postgraduate students whose specialty was Laboratory Animal Science have been conferred Master degree, and 1 is registered. The department has 5 professors and 4 lecturers. The main research fields of the department are studies on the standardization of laboratory animals (including laboratory animal environments, facility, micro biological quality control and nutrition) and animal models for human diseases. As the animal embryonic engineering and molecular biology techniques are penetrating into Laboratory Animal Science, utilizing these techniques to prepare bioengineering animal models (including transgenic and knock-out animals) becomes hot point in the biomedical science. We are now training the young teachers to engage in this field. Now we have laboratories for microbiology, pahtology,biochemistry and
nutrition. According to the projects of 211 engineering of our university,
the construction of laboratory animal facilities will be strengthened.
We are to establish open laboratory for clean animal experiments to heighten
the level of animal experiments.
